After reviewing the sessions and learning objectives, I realized that while I already understand the basic concepts of the World Wide Web, there are several areas I would like to explore further. One of these is Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Although I have encountered it before, I did not fully understand how it works or recognize it by name.
I researched “anchor tags” on Google and learned that they are essential in building websites. Since I am currently taking computer classes to learn web development, I know I will be using anchor tags frequently in the future. However, at this stage, I still find it somewhat challenging to fully understand their purpose, how they function, and what they accomplish within a webpage.
When it comes to bookmarks and favorites, I find them extremely useful and use them regularly in my daily computer activities. They allow me to quickly access websites I visit often without needing to search for them again or browse through my history. This improves my efficiency and helps keep my browsing organized. I also learned a new shortcut—Ctrl + Shift + O—to access bookmarks in Chrome, which I was not familiar with before.
Another concept that was new to me is the difference between first-party and third-party cookies. Previously, I thought all cookies were the same. After doing additional research beyond the slides, I learned that third-party cookies are often used to track user behavior and habits. This raises concerns about security and privacy, which led me to start a discussion on the discussion board about this topic.
I also gained a better understanding of copyright. Before, I believed there was no flexibility when it came to using someone else’s work. Learning about the “fair use” provision helped clarify this. I now understand why instructors can use direct quotes in classroom materials, as educational use often falls under fair use. However, when writing papers, it is still necessary to properly credit any sources that are referenced.
In conclusion, Module 1 helped reinforce concepts I was already familiar with while also introducing new topics that I am still learning. I am confident that by the end of this course, I will have a much deeper understanding of all these concepts.
